While on vacation in the superb Provence region, don't miss a visit to one of the most sumptuous abbeys in France: theThoronet Abbey.

THORONET ABBEY A JEWEL OF CISTERCIAN ARCHITECTURE

Built between 1160 and 1230, theThoronet Abbey is, along with the other historic sites of Silvacane and Sénanque in the Bouches du Rhône and Vaucluse regions respectively, one of the three great Cistercian abbeys of Provence. As such, it has been listed as a historic monument since 1840.

L'Thoronet Abbey is an excellent example of the classical construction of the Cistercian order: it features the clean, simple lines so dear to this order, which, following in greater depth the practices of their elders the BenedictinesThey practice a strict spirituality, close to nature and the values of manual labor.

Unique architecture dedicated exclusively to the life of the order

Entirely devoted to prayer and the spiritual activities of the order, the Cistercians built theThoronet Abbey on a model similar to those of its sisters. The large, voluminous halls were adapted to an essentially communal monastic life, and the building's acoustics were designed to enhance Gregorian chants, commonly practiced by the Cistercian order.

The principle of communal living is reflected throughout the structure, which is remarkably well-preserved:

  • a single washbasin for ablutions;
  • a shared dormitory;
  • a chapter house;
  • and of course a cloister.

It was in the 12th century, when the territory belonged to the Holy Roman Empire, that theThoronet Abbey was founded. And it was in 1785, after almost six centuries of activity, that theThoronet Abbey was finally secularized. A sale of the Abbey's property was announced in 1791, when the last six monks left.

L'Thoronet Abbey is now a National asset open to the public, and offers family visits and activities for children.
