As such, it has been listed as a historic monument since 1840.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L'<strong>Thoronet Abbey<\/strong>&nbsp;is an excellent example of the classical construction of the Cistercian order: it features the clean, simple lines so dear to this order, which, following in greater depth the practices of their elders&nbsp;<em>the Benedictines<\/em>They practice a strict spirituality, close to nature and the values of manual labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unique architecture dedicated exclusively to the life of the order<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Entirely devoted to prayer and the spiritual activities of the order, the Cistercians built the<strong>Thoronet Abbey<\/strong>&nbsp;on a model similar to those of its sisters. The large, voluminous halls were adapted to an essentially communal monastic life, and the building's acoustics were designed to enhance Gregorian chants, commonly practiced by the Cistercian order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The principle of communal living is reflected throughout the structure, which is remarkably well-preserved:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a single washbasin for ablutions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a shared dormitory;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a chapter house;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and of course a cloister.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It was in the 12th century, when the territory belonged to the Holy Roman Empire, that the<strong>Thoronet Abbey<\/strong>&nbsp;was founded. And it was in 1785, after almost six centuries of activity, that the<strong>Thoronet Abbey<\/strong>&nbsp;was finally secularized.
